When June died in May 2003, Johnny Cash was devastated. He lost his dearest companion and soul mate. Writer John Stiepler recalls: “John and June did have a happy ending to their love story. Each doted on the other as they closed out the world around them and quietly allowed peace to reign. I heard John say to her many times ‘We saw it all, didn’t we, baby.’ Whereas at one time he meant that ruefully, it became a valedictory.” Johnny knew he wouldn’t live long without June in his life and at one point her had his daughter Cindy drive him to the cemetery to visit June’s grave. Standing over her marker, he started sobbing again, “I’m coming, baby.”
